Einstein Medical Facility

PROJECT: EINSTEIN MEDICAL FACILITY
LOCATION: BRONX, NY
TYPE: HEALTHCARE
CLIENT: EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

This New medical facility was carefully designed to accommodate a diverse range of healthcare services, consolidating multiple specialties under one roof that includes dedicated office and treatment spaces for dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN), primary care, as well as an on-site pharmacy, offering comprehensive outpatient services within a single integrated environment.

TONAB was tasked with a project site with significant geotechnical challenges that influenced both design and construction strategies. Subsurface investigations revealed bedrock at approximately 12 feet below grade and a high water table at 6 feet, necessitating advanced foundation solutions. Due to the poor soil conditions and water infiltration risks, deep foundations were required. Driven piles were selected as the most effective method to transfer the building loads to more stable strata, ensuring long-term structural integrity and settlement control.
The facility was composed primarily of structural steel, chosen for its speed of erection, strength, and flexibility in accommodating the layout requirements of varied medical departments. The use of steel framing also allowed for larger column-free spaces where needed, particularly in waiting areas and examination suites.
In terms of architectural expression and durability, the facade was designed with a combination of materials to provide both aesthetic appeal and functional performance. The exterior featured masonry for durability and low maintenance, EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) to provide insulation and energy efficiency, and stone panels to add a sense of permanence and visual distinction. This blend of materials was carefully detailed to withstand the regional climate while conveying a modern, professional image appropriate for a healthcare facility.
